SENATE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

 

Requesting THE DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION TO INCLUDE a PARENTING COMPONENT IN SCHOOL CURRICULUM.

 

WHEREAS, Hawaii's children are one of the State's greatest assets and, as a State, we must do everything in our power to ensure that the children of Hawaii are raised in the best environment possible; and

WHEREAS, most parents have no foundation from which to draw upon for guidance in the upbringing of their children; and

WHEREAS, it is in the best interest of the State to provide an adequate foundation in our schools for basic parenting and parental communication skills; and

WHEREAS, the most logical place to learn these needed skills is in our public schools; now, therefore,

BE IT RESOLVED by the Senate of the Twenty-first Legislature of the State of Hawaii, Regular Session of 2001, the House of Representatives concurring, that the Department of Education include a parenting component in school curriculum, such as brain development and its implications in science classes, or parental communication skills in speech and English classes; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Department of Education submit a report of its findings and recommendations in developing a parenting component in school curriculum to the Legislature no later than twenty days before the convening of the Regular Session of 2002; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that certified copies of this Concurrent Resolution be transmitted to the Superintendent of Education.
