SENATE RESOLUTION

 

requesting the department of education to remove soda from drink vending machines in public schools.

 

WHEREAS, na keiki o ka aina typically spend at least seven hours at public school during the weekday; and

WHEREAS, during the extensive time students are at public schools, they should be provided with nutritious food and drinks in order to mature in developmentally appropriate ways; and

WHEREAS, many public schools provide vending machines that offer soda to students, teachers, and staff; and

WHEREAS, soda is unhealthy because it typically contains too much sugar and caffeine; and

WHEREAS, providing soda is not in the best interests of the health of public school students; now, therefore,

BE IT RESOLVED by the Senate of the Twenty-First Legislature of the State of Hawaii, Regular Session of 2001, that the Department of Education is requested to remove soda from drink vending machines in all public schools in favor of more nutritional drinks; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that certified copies of this Resolution be transmitted to the Chairperson of the Board of Education and the Superintendent of Education.
