STAND. COM. REP. NO.1177

Honolulu, Hawaii

, 2001

RE: H.B. No. 1216

H.D. 1

Honorable Robert Bunda

President of the Senate

Twenty-First State Legislature

Regular Session of 2001

State of Hawaii

Sir:

Your Committee on Education, to which was referred H.B. No. 1216, H.D. 1, entitled:

"A BILL FOR AN ACT RELATING TO THE KOREAN CENTENNIAL CELEBRATION COMMISSION,"

begs leave to report as follows:

The purpose of this measure is to appropriate funds to the Korean Centennial Celebration Commission in preparation for its celebration in 2003.

Your Committee received testimony in favor of this measure from the Korean Centennial Celebration Commission, Korean American Bar Association Hawaii, Director of the Center for Korean Studies at the University of Hawaii, and one individual.

Your Committee finds that Hawaii's vibrant Korean community is preparing for the 2003 centennial celebration of Korean immigration to the United States which started in Hawaii in 1903. It is with great honor and pride that the State of Hawaii will serve as host to this momentous occasion. The Korean Centennial Celebration Commission has been planning this event since 1999. As the day of the centennial celebration nears, it is clear that tens of thousands of people from all over the world will be visiting Hawaii for this occasion. This measure provides necessary funds to aid in the success of the Korean centennial celebration, thus, boosting the State's tourism and overall economy.

As affirmed by the record of votes of the members of your Committee on Education that is attached to this report, your Committee is in accord with the intent and purpose of H.B. No. 1216, H.D. 1, and recommends that it pass Second Reading and be referred to the Committee on Ways and Means.

Respectfully submitted on behalf of the members of the Committee on Education,
