STAND. COM. REP. NO.117

Honolulu, Hawaii

, 2001

RE: S.B. No. 1493

Honorable Robert Bunda

President of the Senate

Twenty-First State Legislature

Regular Session of 2001

State of Hawaii

Sir:

Your Committee on Tourism and Intergovernmental Affairs, to which was referred S.B. No. 1493 entitled:

"A BILL FOR AN ACT MAKING AN APPROPRIATION FOR WILDFIRE PREVENTION AND FIGHTING ON WEST MAUI,"

begs leave to report as follows:

The purpose of this measure is to appropriate an unspecified amount for preventing and fighting wildfires that threaten to close the Honoapiilani Highway in west Maui.

Your Committee received testimony in support of this measure from the Department of Land and Natural Resources and three members of the Maui County Council.

Your Committee finds that Honoapiilani Highway is the only usable roadway for part of the route between Wailuku and Kapalua, and motorists may be detained for hours if there are brush fires in the region.

Your Committee is supportive of the cooperative efforts of the State and county to prevent and suppress wild fires along the highway corridor.

As affirmed by the record of votes of the members of your Committee on Tourism and Intergovernmental Affairs that is attached to this report, your Committee is in accord with the intent and purpose of S.B. No. 1493 and recommends that it pass Second Reading and be referred to the Committee on Ways and Means.

Respectfully submitted on behalf of the members of the Committee on Tourism and Intergovernmental Affairs,
