STAND. COM. REP. NO.797

RE: S.B. No. 498

S.D. 1

Honorable Robert Bunda

President of the Senate

Twenty-First State Legislature

Regular Session of 2001

State of Hawaii

Sir:

Your Committee on Ways and Means, to which was referred S.B. No. 498 entitled:

"A BILL FOR AN ACT MAKING AN APPROPRIATION FOR THE NANAKULI HOMESTEAD CEMETERY,"

begs leave to report as follows:

The purpose of this measure is to appropriate funds for the repair and maintenance of the Nanakuli Homestead Cemetery.

Your Committee finds that the Nanakuli Homestead Cemetery, located within the Nanakuli Hawaiian Homestead area has been maintained by residents in the Homestead for many years as a measure of their respect and honor given their ancestors. Unfortunately, major rehabilitative work to replace headstones, restore retaining walls and paths, landscaping, and other labor-intensive tasks cannot be accomplished merely with volunteer aid. Some funding is necessary to purchase equipment, materials, and plants, for example. This measure is designed to accomplish these goals.

Your Committee has amended this bill by changing all dollar amounts to $1 (and the total to $4) to promote further discussion. Additionally, your Committee has made technical nonsubstantive amendments in keeping with proper drafting style.

As affirmed by the record of votes of the members of your Committee on Ways and Means that is attached to this report, your Committee is in accord with the intent and purpose of S.B. No. 498, as amended herein, and recommends that it pass Third Reading in the form attached hereto as S.B. No. 498, S.D. 1.

Respectfully submitted on behalf of the members of the Committee on Ways and Means,
