STAND. COM. REP. NO.1597

Honolulu, Hawaii

, 2001

RE: S.C.R. No. 24

Honorable Robert Bunda

President of the Senate

Twenty-First State Legislature

Regular Session of 2001

State of Hawaii

Sir:

Your Committee on Health and Human Services, to which was referred S.C.R. No. 24 entitled:

"SENATE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION URGING A STUDY OF OLDER UNDERGROUND PLUMBING SYSTEMS AND WATER SYSTEMS STATEWIDE TO ASSESS HEALTH RISKS,"

begs leave to report as follows:

The purpose of this measure is to urge a study of older underground plumbing systems and water systems statewide to assess health risk.

Testimony in support of this measure was submitted by the Board of Water Supply.

Your Committee finds that some of our plumbing systems were installed in the 1930's and may include harmful materials such as asbestos, which are no longer considered safe. Your Committee further finds that there is a need to assess these older underground plumbing systems for the health and safety of our residents.

As affirmed by the record of votes of the members of your Committee on Health and Human Services that is attached to this report, your Committee concurs with the intent and purpose of S.C.R. No. 24 and recommends its adoption.

Respectfully submitted on behalf of the members of the Committee on Health and Human Services,
