A BILL FOR AN ACT

 

relating to graduation from high school.

 

BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF HAWAII:

SECTION 1. Chapter 302A, Hawaii Revised Statutes, is amended by adding a new section to part II to be appropriately designated and to read as follows:

"§302A- Minimum requirements for graduation from high school. (a) Beginning with the 2004-2005 school year, the minimum requirements for graduation from high school, grades nine to twelve, shall be twenty-two credits of the following courses:

(1) English, 4.0 credits;

(2) Social studies, 4.0 credits;

(3) Mathematics, 3.0 credits;

(4) Science, 3.0 credits;

(5) Physical education, 1.0 credits;

(6) Health, 0.5 credits;

(7) Guidance, 0.5 credits;

(8) Fine arts, 1.0 credits; and

(9) Electives, 5.0 credits.

(b) The board may adopt rules in accordance with chapter 91 to add to the minimum requirements for graduation from high school specified in subsection (a)."

SECTION 2. New statutory material is underscored.

SECTION 3. This Act shall take effect upon its approval.
