HOUSE CONCURRENT

RESOLUTION

 

REQUESTING THE Hawaii visitors and convention bureau to work with the university of hawaii to coordinate professors' conferences.

 

 

WHEREAS, tourism represents the life blood of Hawaii's economy by providing critical employment and income for its businesses and citizens; and

WHEREAS, the Legislature has recognized the importance of fostering a strong tourism industry by establishing the Hawaii Tourism Authority (HTA) to oversee and coordinate statewide tourism promotion efforts and by providing the HTA with a dedicated source of funding; and

WHEREAS, under the auspices of the HTA, the Hawaii Visitors and Convention Bureau (HVCB) has served as the primary entity responsible for promoting and marketing Hawaii and creating a sustainable and diversified travel destination demand for the Hawaiian Islands; and

WHEREAS, as an important component of tourism, the HVCB has marketed Hawaii as a viable destination for various conferences and conventions held in the recently constructed Hawaii Convention Center and other locations; and

WHEREAS, professors at the University of Hawaii belong to a wide variety of professional organizations and societies that regularly hold conferences and annual meetings; and

WHEREAS, many of these professional organizations would like to hold such meetings in Hawaii; now, therefore,

BE IT RESOLVED by the House of Representatives of the Twenty-first Legislature of the State of Hawaii, Regular Session of 2002, the Senate concurring, that the HVCB is requested to work with the University of Hawaii to promote and coordinate conferences and conventions held by organizations and societies from which professors from the University of Hawaii claim membership; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the HVCB, on behalf of the professors of the University of Hawaii, coordinate and manage all aspects of any such convention or conference; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the HVCB obtain from the University of Hawaii a list of professional organizations and societies from which its professors claim membership; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the HVCB develop a generic package of low, middle, and high cost accommodations and add-on activities, such as luaus and sightseeing, to present to the University of Hawaii for consideration as part of potential convention or conference packages; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that certified copies of this Concurrent Resolution be transmitted to the President of the University of Hawaii and the Executive Director of HVCB.
