recognizing april as TSUNAMI AWARENESS MONTH.
WHEREAS, the people of the State of Hawaii are proud to recognize those extraordinary services that are dedicated to creating a safe environment and protecting our lives by forewarning the public of natural disasters; and
WHEREAS, in 1946, a tsunami originating from the Aleutian Islands struck Hawaii without warning, causing extreme damage, injuries, and loss of life; and
WHEREAS, from 1900-1964, eight Pacific-wide tsunamis had shoreline run-up wave heights of 10 feet including two with heights greater than 50 feet that hit the Hawaiian islands; and
WHEREAS, in 1949, the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center, located in Ewa Beach, Hawaii, was established to provide warnings regarding Pacific basin tsunamis to almost every country around the Pacific rim and to most of the Pacific island states and Hawaii; and
WHEREAS, TSUNAMI AWARENESS MONTH is held in April to commemorate those who have lost their lives in the April 1, 1946 tsunami, and during this month Hawaii, Alaska, Washington, Oregon, and California sponsor disaster awareness public events and activities to help educate the community about tsunamis and how to be prepared for them; now, therefore,
BE IT RESOLVED by the House of Representatives of the Twenty-first Legislature of the State of Hawaii, Regular Session of 2002, that this body hereby recognizes April as TSUNAMI AWARENESS MONTH, and commends the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration which is the parent organization of the Richard H. Hagemeyer Pacific Tsunami Warning Center and the
host of the International Tsunami Warning Center, as well as Hawaii State and County Civil Defense, and the Pacific Tsunami Museum for being leaders in tsunami research and education, and extends to them its warmest aloha and best wishes for continued success.
