HOUSE RESOLUTION

 

CONGRATULATING MASARU "PUNDY" YOKOUCHI for achieving the inaugural sidney r. yates advocacy award.

 

 

WHEREAS, in 2002, the Sidney R. Yates Advocacy Award, named in honor of the Congressman who was wholeheartedly committed to the arts, will be inaugurated to honor an individual or organization for a particular advocacy effort or campaign that has had a significant impact on the performing arts at the national, state, or local level; and

WHEREAS, MASARU "PUNDY" YOKOUCHI has devoted his life to supporting the arts and arts education, enriching the lives of many people by contributing to the establishment of the Maui Arts and Cultural Center, and has lended his strong guidance and influence as a director of organizations such as the Honolulu Academy of Arts, Hawaii Theater, and the Hawaii Alliance for Arts Education, and as a member of several other arts boards and organizations; and

WHEREAS, as the first Chairman of the State Foundation on Culture and the Arts, MASARU "PUNDY" YOKOUCHI provided the vision and leadership required to preserve and nurture the traditional Hawaiian culture performing and visual art forms that were struggling when the council began, and assisted in acquiring funding for the growth of arts education programs as an integral component of school curricula throughout the state; and

WHEREAS, in addition to a successful career and fulfilling role advocating the arts, MASARU "PUNDY" YOKOUCHI, together with his wife Shirley, raised four wonderful children: daughters Sheryl-Lynn Suzuki, Leslie-Ann Bancaco, and Clarice Miki Yokouchi, and a son, Jon M. Yokouchi; and

WHEREAS, in recognition of his dedication and selfless contributions to the people of Hawaii and the art community as a whole, the Association of Performing Arts Presenters has fittingly named MASARU "PUNDY" YOKOUCHI as the first-ever recipient of the Sidney R. Yates Award for his commitment and devotion to the arts; now, therefore,

BE IT RESOLVED by the House of Representatives of the Twenty-first Legislature of the State of Hawaii, Regular Session of 2002, that this body hereby commends and honors MASARU "PUNDY" YOKOUCHI, recipient of the 2002 Sidney R. Yates Award for his commitment to promoting the arts, and extends to him its warmest Aloha and best wishes for continued success in all future endeavors.
