A BILL FOR AN ACT
relating to agriculture.
BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF HAWAII:
SECTION 1. The legislature finds that Hawaii is overly dependent on imported foods.
The purpose of this Act is to reduce Hawaii's dependence on imported foods by appropriating funds to the department of agriculture to conduct a program to achieve a fifty per cent reduction in the total amount of imported food purchased by Hawaii residents that could be purchased from locally produced sources by July 1, 2005.
SECTION 2. There is appropriated out of the general revenues of the State of Hawaii the sum of $ , or so much thereof as may be necessary for fiscal year 2002-2003, for the department of agriculture to conduct a program to achieve a fifty per cent reduction in the total amount of imported food purchased by Hawaii residents that could be purchased from locally produced sources by July 1, 2005.
SECTION 3. The sum appropriated shall be expended by the department of agriculture for the purposes of this Act.
SECTION 4. This Act shall take effect on July 1, 2002.
