Report Title:

Korean War Museum; Appropriation

Description:

Appropriates funds to establish a Korean War museum.

THE SENATE

S.B. NO.

552

TWENTY-FIRST LEGISLATURE, 2001

STATE OF HAWAII

A BILL FOR AN ACT

MAKING AN APPROPRIATION FOR A KOREAN WAR MUSEUM.

BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF HAWAII:

SECTION 1. The legislature finds that many Hawaiian residents valiantly served their country during the Korean War. While the Korean War Memorial in Washington, D.C., is a fine tribute to our Korean War veterans, it does not tell the full story of their valor, heroism, and sacrifices for freedom.

The legislature further finds that a Korean War museum in Hawaii would be a valuable place of study and learning, where future generations can learn the true story behind the Korean War. It will also be a place where Korean War veterans can unite and reflect with pride upon the sacrifices they made for freedom and democracy. The family members of the fifty-three thousand Korean War casualties can also use the museum as a source of pride and remembrance, where they can find peace in the sacrifices of their loved ones. Construction of a museum will also help to preserve the documents, photos, and memorabilia from the Korean War.

The purpose of this Act is to appropriate funds for the construction of a Korean War museum in Hawaii.

SECTION 2. There is appropriated out of the general revenues of the State of Hawaii the sum of $3,000,000, or so much thereof as may be necessary for fiscal year 2001-2002, for the establishment of a National Korean War museum in Hawaii.

SECTION 3. The sum appropriated shall be expended by the department of business, economic development, and tourism for the purposes of this Act.

SECTION 4. This Act shall take effect on July 1, 2001.
