HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES

H.R. NO.

144

TWENTY-SECOND LEGISLATURE, 2003

STATE OF HAWAII

HOUSE RESOLUTION

REQUESTING THE RELOCATION OF THE QUEEN LILI'UOKALANI STATUE TO WASHINGTON PLACE.

WHEREAS, Queen Lili'uokalani, the last monarch of Hawai'i was a strong ruler who was much beloved by her people; and

WHEREAS, in 1975, the State Legislature, recognizing the important role of the Queen in the rich history of Hawai'i, established a jury, appointed by the Governor, to recommend the commissioning of a statue, "The Spirit of Lili'uokalani", to be placed in permanent display at the State Capitol; and

WHEREAS, sculptor Mariana Pineda was chosen to design the statue, which was unveiled and dedicated on the State Capitol grounds on April 10, 1982; and

WHEREAS, the statue, "The Spirit of Lili'uokalani", stands as a symbol to her people that her struggle for justice was a lifelong battle in her mind, body, and soul; and

WHEREAS, the current location on the Capitol Mall Walkway, formerly known as "Hotel Street", is not the ideal place for a statue of any monarch past or present worthy of such a title; and

WHEREAS, with the construction of the new Governor's house, Washington Place, Queen Lili'oukalani's home, will be open to the public on a regular basis; and

WHEREAS, a more fitting place for this beloved statue is at her beloved home, Washington Place, not on the back sidewalk of the Capitol grounds, with her back facing Iolani Palace, but at a place she once called home, where she can more appropriately face the Capitol and Iolani Palace and greet her people; now, therefore,

BE IT RESOLVED by the House of Representatives of the Twenty-second Legislature of the State of Hawaii, Regular Session of 2003, that the Governor is respectfully requested to have the statue, "The Spirit of Lili'uokalani", moved from her present location behind the State Capitol to Washington Place, fronting South Beretania Street; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the statue, "The Spirit of Lili'uokalani", be located at Washington Place where she can be freely visited by her people and visitors to the islands; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that certified copies of this Resolution be transmitted to the Governor and the Comptroller.
