HOUSE RESOLUTION

 

requesting the department of land and natural resources and the hawaii tourism authority to collaborate in preserving and protecting hawaii's beaches for residents and visitors.

 

 

WHEREAS, the Hawaii State Constitution mandates that the State and its political subdivisions shall conserve and protect Hawaii's natural beauty and shall promote the development and use of natural resources in a manner consistent with and conducive to their conservation; and

WHEREAS, the Department of Land and Natural Resources (DLNR) serves as the lead agency in protecting the physical and cultural resources of Hawaii; and

WHEREAS, in its mission statement, the Hawaii Tourism Authority (HTA) recognizes the importance of preserving Hawaii's fragile natural environment and precious natural resources to sustain future generations of residents and visitors; and

WHEREAS, HTA is charged with strategically managing the growth of the State's visitor industry; and

WHEREAS, among other activities, HTA promotes the allure of the world's best beaches, specifically:

(1) Haena Beach on the island of Kauai;

(2) Kapalua Beach on the island of Maui;

(3) Hulopoe Beach on the island of Lanai;

(4) Lanikai Beach on the island of Oahu;

(5) Popohaku Beach on the island of Molokai; and

(6) Hapuna Beach on the island of Hawaii (best beaches);

now, therefore,

BE IT RESOLVED by the House of Representatives of the Twenty-second Legislature of the State of Hawaii, Regular Session of 2003, that DLNR is requested to preserve the best beaches for the benefit of future generations by increasing its outreach programs to involve civic and nonprofit organizations, community groups, residents, and visitors in the protection of these precious natural resources; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that HTA is requested to support DLNR in its efforts to preserve these precious natural resources; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that certified copies of this Resolution be transmitted to the Governor, the Chairperson of the Board of Land and Natural Resources, and the Chairperson of the Board of Directors of HTA.
