supporting the efforts of the anahola Homesteaders council in developing the project faith multi-purpose community center in anahola, kaua`i.
WHEREAS, in 1994 a grassroots group consisting of native Hawaiians formed the Anahola Homesteaders Council (AHC) that has since evolved and includes community leaders, an advisory council of elders, a Native Hawaiian professional consulting team, community based organizations, and various social service and Hawaiian agencies; and
WHEREAS, AHC is a 501 C-3 non-profit corporation whose mission is to provide a better quality of life for native Hawaiians living on Hawaiian Home Lands; and
WHEREAS, the community of Anahola, situated on Hawaiian Home Lands on the island of Kaua`i, is heavily populated with native Hawaiian families; and
WHEREAS, it is estimated by the Department of Hawaiian Home Lands that by the year 2004, the community of Anahola will experience a 50% population increase; and
WHEREAS, Project Faith is AHC's vision of a multi-purpose community center in Anahola that is expected to provide:
(1) Job training;
(2) Employment (short and term);
(3) Entrepreneurial opportunities for Hawaiian families;
(4) Community renewal;
(5) Hawaiian language and cultural revival;
(6) Native educational opportunities;
(7) Health care and social services;
(8) Elderly healthcare and housing;
(9) Hawaiiana and natural science education; and
(10) Sports and recreation;
and
WHEREAS, AHC has been actively pursuing an economic plan through collaborative partnerships utilizing the expertise of a volunteer advisory council that includes state community planners, architectural and engineering professionals, elderly care providers, teachers, business professionals, and native cultural specialists; and
WHEREAS, AHC has developed a partnership with Kanu I Ka Pono (KANU), a non-profit organization providing the expertise of native Hawaiian educators from across the State; and
WHEREAS, KANU has committed to:
(1) Developing and implementing a culturally appropriate and relevant entrepreneurial training program for Hawaiian families interested in becoming self-sustaining through opportunities provided by Project Faith;
(2) Developing pathways and mentoring programs for Hawaiian youth interested in the fields of architecture, engineering, marketing, production, and balanced development; and
(3) Assisting with providing a detailed architectural and management plan for a Cultural Education Center that will serve a multiple of functions;
and
WHEREAS, AHC and KANU share the belief that education and community renewal is the key to economic sustainability and a healthy thriving community; and
WHEREAS, the Land Management Division of the Department of Hawaiian Home Lands granted a twenty-five year license to AHC for the development of the multi-phase, multi-use commercial, residential, and public facility project known as Project Faith; now, therefore,
BE IT RESOLVED by the Senate of the Twenty-Second Legislature of the State of Hawaii, Regular Session of 2003, that the Senate supports the efforts of AHC in developing the Project Faith multi-purpose community center in Anahola, Kaua`i; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that certified copies of this Resolution be transmitted to the Anahola Homesteaders Council, Kanu I Ka Pono, and the Department of Hawaiian Home Lands.
