RESOLUTION
urging state and honolulu county RECOGNItion of the VIETNAMESE AMERICAN COMMUNITY'S FLAG SYMBOL.
WHEREAS, Vietnamese Americans in the State of Hawaii should be honored and remembered for their struggle for freedom and human rights; and
WHEREAS, Hawaii is the home to many Vietnamese Americans, whose contributions to this state should be appreciated; and
WHEREAS, a flag, which consists of three horizontal stripes of red upon a field of goldenrod, represents the Vietnamese American community, their culture, and their long history that is celebrated and honored; and
WHEREAS, the vast majority of Vietnamese Americans embrace the goldenrod flag with three red stripes as a symbol of their background and current identity; and
WHEREAS, Vietnamese Americans annually commemorate April 30th as "Remembrance Day" to remind themselves to remain vigilant in opposition to tyranny in all forms, to actively support human rights for all people, and to celebrate the principles of democracy, justice, and tolerance upon which our nation was founded; and
WHEREAS, Vietnamese American veterans have been approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs as one of its official veterans organizations, to participate, with its goldenrod flag, in all state and federal sponsored veterans activities; now, therefore,
BE IT RESOLVED by the Senate of the Twenty-Second Legislature of the State of Hawaii, Regular Session of 2004, the House of Representatives concurring, that the Hawaii State Legislature hereby recognizes the flag which consists of three horizontal stripes of red upon a field of gold as the flag of the Vietnamese American community of Hawaii and recognizes that the flag may be displayed as part of a flag ceremony approved by the state government; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Hawaii State Legislature urges state organizations and the County of Honolulu to recognize the goldenrod flag with three red stripes as the symbol of the Vietnamese American community of Hawaii and establish the manner by which the flag may be ceremoniously displayed on state premises; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that certified copies of this Concurrent Resolution be transmitted to the Free Vietnam Organization in Hawaii, Governor, Mayor of Honolulu, City Council of Honolulu, and the Senate President.
