HOUSE RESOLUTION

 

Commending and congratulating 'OLELO community television's second annual statewide youth xchange competition, participants of the winning schools, AND its sponsors.

 

 

WHEREAS, 'OLELO Community Television has furthered their commitment to providing a forum for a rich mix of voices that celebrate our community's diverse perspectives by sponsoring its second annual YOUTH XCHANGE COMPETITION; and

WHEREAS, the YOUTH XCHANGE COMPETITION is a statewide contest that allows all of Hawaii's students to use their knowledge, creativity, and youthful insight to bring awareness to critical issues affecting and influencing Hawaii's youth through the use of video in the categories of news, public service announcement, mini-documentary, music video, and animation and shorts; and

WHEREAS, in 2004, schools throughout the State submitted more than 150 entries for the YOUTH XCHANGE COMPETITION with the top six issues being drug use, teen suicide, the environment, school values and behavior, health, and driving under the influence of an intoxicant; and

WHEREAS, building upon the success of its first year, the YOUTH XCHANGE COMPETITION has drawn continued and widespread interest from students, with entries in 2005 increasing to over 200 submissions from various age groups and encompassing a wide range of subjects including: date rape, smoking, street racing, stress, tracing one's roots, teens and war, and survival; and

WHEREAS, the co-producers of the YOUTH XCHANGE COMPETITION, 'Olelo Community Television, and Waianae High School's Searider Productions, have been able to secure invaluable financial support from an array of sponsors which includes JW Marriott Ihilani Spa and Resort at Ko 'Olina, Sony Hawaii, First Hawaiian Bank, among numerous individuals throughout the state, whose support is indicative of the increased community awareness for this unique project; and

WHEREAS, Hawaii's young filmmakers have succeeded in capturing the attention of their fellow students, teachers, administrators, legislators, and community members through this innovative competition; now, therefore,

BE IT RESOLVED by the House of Representatives of the Twenty-third Legislature of the State of Hawaii, Regular Session of 2005, that this body hereby commends and applauds 'Olelo Community Television's Second Annual YOUTH XCHANGE COMPETITION for their noteworthy contribution to the community, congratulates the participants of the winning schools and their sponsors, and extends to all of them its warmest aloha and best wishes for continued success in future endeavors.
