TWENTY-THIRD LEGISLATURE, 2005

STATE OF HAWAII

A BILL FOR AN ACT

relating to education.

BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF HAWAII:

SECTION 1. The legislature has supported and will continue to support efforts by the department of education to enhance the civic commitment of students and their desired ability to meet the evolving needs of today's communities. The legislature finds that serving on state boards, councils, or associations provides a valuable forum within which students acquire valuable leadership skills, learn to assume civic responsibility, and prepare to become actively involved in the democratic process.

The purpose of this Act is to encourage continued student participation in civic organizations through incentives in the form of elective school credits that can be applied towards a student's graduation requirement.

SECTION 2. Chapter 302A, Hawaii Revised Statutes, is amended by adding a new section to be appropriately designated and to read as follows:

"§302A-__ Academic credit for student participation on state boards, councils, or associations.

The department of education shall grant elective school credit to any student serving on a state board, council, or association and shall apply this credit towards a student's graduation requirement."

SECTION 3. New statutory material is underscored.

SECTION 4. This Act shall take effect upon its approval.
