HOUSE RESOLUTION

 

Honoring dr. ed cadman for his contributions to the john a. burns school of medicine.

 

 

WHEREAS, spending time fishing and running mountain trails while growing up in Oregon, DR. ED CADMAN's understanding of the rough terrain and unexpected challenges of life provided him with the determination to run with endurance; and

WHEREAS, a graduate of Stanford University and University of Oregon Medical School, Dr. Ed Cadman quickly gained a national reputation as a sincere man with heart, vision, and the ability to unite others as he served as a professor, Chairman, and Dean of medicine at the Yale Medical School and chief of staff at Yale New Haven Hospital; and

WHEREAS, in 1999, Dr. Ed Cadman accepted a position as the Dean of the John A. Burns School of Medicine (JABSOM) at the University of Hawaii (UH), where he would serve as the catalyst between Hawaii's future biotechnological industry and sound medical research; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Ed Cadman became the driving force behind the successful establishment of JABSOM's new state-of-the-art campus in Kakaako, enabling JABSOM to excel in training new physicians while expanding opportunities for biomedical research; and

WHEREAS, research grants and contracts increased by more than 500 percent, from $3,200,000 in 1999, to nearly $20,000,000 in 2004 under DR. ED CADMAN's leadership and today, about half the practicing physicians in Hawaii are graduates of JABSOM; and

WHEREAS, in 2005, after fulfilling his commitment to oversee the development of JABSOM, Dr. Ed Cadman graciously stepped down as dean of JABSOM and successfully transferred leadership to interim Dean Dr. Sam Shomaker; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Ed Cadman's honesty, vision, and efforts set the pace and course for JABSOM, UH, Kakaako, and the State of Hawaii to thrive as a place for world-class research and biotechnological innovation; now, therefore,

BE IT RESOLVED by the House of Representatives of the Twenty-third Legislature of the State of Hawaii, Regular Session of 2006, that this body hereby recognizes Dr. Ed Cadman for his dignity, sincerity, and commitment to transforming the University of Hawaii's John A. Burns School of Medicine into a state-of-the-art, world-class facility, and offers its best wishes for continued success.
