Separate Nanakuli High School from Nanakuli Intermediate School.

HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES

H.B. NO.

132

TWENTY-FOURTH LEGISLATURE, 2007

STATE OF HAWAII

A BILL FOR AN ACT

relating to education.

BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF HAWAII:

SECTION 1.  The legislature finds that Nanakuli High School and Nanakuli Intermediate School have shared the same facilities for over three decades.  Although there are many reasons for the consolidation, including enrollment, economies of scale, and cost, there are negative social impacts that come with high school and intermediate school students to intermingle.  These include teen pregnancy, bullying, assault, and the possibility of lower academic performance as a result of dealing with the pressures and consequences of these issues.

The purpose of this Act is to find a balanced solution to reduce the negative social impacts of a consolidated high school and elementary school while keeping the advantages of cost savings and economies of scale.

SECTION 2.  The department of education shall cause the separation of students of Nanakuli High School from students of Nanakuli Intermediate School through any means reasonably intended to minimize the social interaction of Nanakuli High School and Nanakuli Intermediate School students without diminishing the delivery of educational services, including, but not limited to, the use of separate daily scheduling and dedicated classroom or building space.  Nothing in this Act shall be interpreted to effect the separation of administrative services.

SECTION 3.  This Act shall take effect on January 1, 2008.
