A BILL FOR AN ACT


 

 

relating to workplace training.

 

 

BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF HAWAII:

 


SECTION 1.  The purpose of this Act is to ensure that ethnic and diversity training becomes an integral part of the employee training curriculum of the department of public safety so that cultural sensitivity and awareness can be incorporated into the daily activities of the department's corrections division employees.

SECTION 2.  The department of public safety shall develop, in consultation with the department of human resources, a training curriculum for its correctional employees to gain a general understanding of ethnic and cultural diversity and its implications for working with adult offenders of various ethnic backgrounds and their families.  The training shall be available to all managers and other personnel employed at Hawaii facilities and out-of-state contracted facilities on an annual basis.

The ethnic and diversity training curriculum shall be developed by January 1, 2009.  The department of public safety shall submit a report on the status of the ethnic and diversity training for all employees of the corrections division to the legislature not later than twenty days prior to the start of the regular session of 2010.

     SECTION 3.  This Act shall take effect upon its approval.
