     Your Committee on Education, to which was referred Governor's Message No. 530, submitting for study and consideration the nomination of: 

 

Hawai'i Medical Education Council

GARY K. KAJIWARA,

for a term to expire 6-30-2011,

 

begs leave to report as follows:

 

     Upon review of the background information submitted by the nominee, your Committee finds that Gary K. Kajiwara holds a Bachelor's degree, a Master's degree in business administration, and a Master's degree in public health from the University of Hawaii and currently serves as the President and Chief Executive Officer of Kuakini Health Systems and its subsidiaries.  Mr. Kajiwara is being nominated to service as his first term of membership on the Hawaii Medical Education Council as a representative of a hospital at which an accredited graduate medical education program is conducted.  He has served in various capacities within the Kuakini Health System throughout his career as well as service as a member or officer of various professional and community organizations.  Mr. Kajiwara has been recognized and honored for his endeavors and achievements, in both the professional and community arenas.

 

     Testimony in support of the nominee was submitted by the Hawaii Healthcare Association of Hawaii and one individual.

 

     Your Committee questioned the nominee regarding his knowledge of the Council, members' duties and responsibilities, and his understanding of the problems associated with and his vision for ensuring adequate physicians practicing within the State.  The nominee demonstrated a working knowledge of the issues facing the Council as well as a commitment to improving and growing graduate medical education in the State.

 

     As affirmed by the record of votes of the members of your Committee on Education that is attached to this report, your Committee, after full consideration of the background, experience, and qualifications of the nominee, has found the nominee to be qualified for the position to which nominated and recommends that the Senate advise and consent to the nomination.
