STAND. COM. REP. NO. 3657

Honolulu, Hawaii

RE:    GOV. MSG. NO. 568

Honorable Colleen Hanabusa

President of the Senate

Twenty-Fourth State Legislature

Regular Session of 2008

State of Hawaii

Madam:

Your Committee on Commerce, Consumer Protection, and Affordable Housing, to which was referred Governor's Message No. 568, submitting for study and consideration the nomination of:

State Board of Nursing

G.M. No. 568

DENISE L. COHEN,

for a term to expire 6-30-2011,

begs leave to report as follows:

Your Committee reviewed the personal history, resume, and statement submitted by the nominee, and finds Denise L. Cohen to have the necessary qualifications to be nominated to the State Board of Nursing.

Testimony in support of Ms. Cohen's nomination was submitted by the Department of Commerce and Consumer Affairs and two private individuals.

Ms. Cohen received her Bachelor of Science and Master of Science degrees in Nursing from the University of Hawaii at Manoa.  She currently serves as a full-time tenured track Nurse Practitioner and Instructor at Maui Community College (MCC) where she teaches nursing theory and performs clinical supervision of MCC student nurses.  In addition to her teaching responsibilities, she serves as the clinician in charge of the Campus Health Center, the success of which is attributed to her instrumental role in the operations of the Center.  She is a member of the American Nurses' Association, the Hawaii Nurses' Association, Sigma Theta Tau, the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners, and the Aloha Association for the Deaf.

Ms. Cohen is a board certified Family Nurse Practioner who is concerned about both the nursing and nursing faculty shortages in the State and hopes to bring her academic and clinical experience to bear on the Board's efforts to address those issues.  Ms. Cohen's demonstrated commitment, motivation, teaching background, education, and professional experiences will greatly assist the State Board of Nursing.

As affirmed by the record of votes of the members of your Committee on Commerce, Consumer Protection, and Affordable Housing that is attached to this report, your Committee, after full consideration of the background, experience, and qualifications of the nominee, has found the nominee to be qualified for the position to which nominated and recommends that the Senate advise and consent to the nomination.

Respectfully submitted on behalf of the members of the Committee on Commerce, Consumer Protection, and Affordable Housing,
