A BILL FOR AN ACT

 

 

RELATING TO THE ARTS.

 

 

BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF HAWAII:

 


     SECTION 1.  Chapter 9, Hawaii Revised Statutes, is amended by adding a new section to be appropriately designated and to read as follows:

     "§9-    State poet laureate.  (a)  There is established within the state foundation on culture and the arts a state poet laureate to be appointed by the governor pursuant to section 26‑34, except as provided in this section.  The governor shall appoint a state poet laureate from a list of three nominees provided by the state foundation on culture and the arts.  The appointment shall not be subject to senate confirmation.

     (b)  The state poet laureate shall serve a two-year term and may be reappointed to one additional term.

(c)  The state poet laureate shall promote the reading, writing, and appreciation of poetry throughout the State and may also be asked to write original poetry commemorating certain events, people, or places.

     (d)  The state poet laureate shall serve without compensation but may be reimbursed for reasonable expenses, including travel expenses, incurred in the discharge of duties."

     SECTION 2.  New statutory material is underscored.

     SECTION 3.  This Act shall take effect upon its approval.
