HOUSE CONCURRENT

RESOLUTION

 

 

requesting the state foundation on culture and the arts to convene a task force to explore the creation of a new, sustainable symphony in the wake of the liquidation of the Honolulu Symphony.

 

 

 


     WHEREAS, prior to filing for bankruptcy and liquidation late in 2009, the Honolulu Symphony had a storied history of producing and performing symphonic music for more than a century; and

 

     WHEREAS, the Honolulu Symphony was a nationally recognized orchestra, having recorded the soundtrack to the film "Princess Kaiulani," and earning a Grammy nomination; and

 

     WHEREAS, Hawaii residents, and the youth in particular, will greatly benefit from continued exposure to symphony performances; and

 

     WHEREAS, the demise of the Honolulu Symphony should not mean the end to live symphonic music performances in Hawaii; now, therefore,

 

     BE IT RESOLVED by the House of Representatives of the Twenty-sixth Legislature of the State of Hawaii, Regular Session of 2011, the Senate concurring, that the State Foundation on Culture and the Arts is requested to convene a task force to explore the creation of a new, sustainable symphony in the wake of the liquidation of the Honolulu Symphony; and

 

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the task force recommendations are requested to include a plan to lay the foundation for a sustainable symphony that serves the community and provides all Hawaii students exposure to symphony performances; and

 

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the task force is requested to include, but not be limited to the following members:

 

     (1)  The Executive Director of the State Foundation on Culture and the Arts;

 

     (2)  A representative from the Honolulu Symphony Society;

 

     (3)  A representative from the Musicians' Association of Hawaii Local 677 AFM; and

 

     (4)  A representative from the Honolulu Youth Symphony; and

 

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the task force is requested to select from among its members a chairperson and any other officers it deems necessary; and

 

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the task force is requested to submit a final report of its findings and recommendations, including any proposed legislation, to the Legislature no later than twenty days prior to the convening of the Regular Session of 2012; and

 

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that certified copies of this Concurrent Resolution be transmitted to the Executive Director of the State Foundation on Culture and the Arts, the Director of the Honolulu Symphony Society, the President of the Musicians' Association of Hawaii Local 677 AFM, and the Director of the Honolulu Youth Symphony.
