HOUSE RESOLUTION
RECOGNIZING AND COMMENDING CECILIO AND KAPONO on their lifetime achievement award AS CONTEMPORARY HAWAIIAN MUSIC ARTISTS.
WHEREAS, music has always played an integral role in Hawaiian culture, from traditional chants to the resurgence of Hawaiian-influenced mainstream music in the late 20th century; and
WHEREAS, the musical traditions celebrated in Hawaii experienced a resurgence in the 1970s known as the Hawaiian Renaissance; and
WHEREAS, introduced by mutual friends during the Hawaiian Renaissance, Cecilio Rodriguez and Henry Kapono Kaʻaihue merged into one, forming CECILIO & KAPONO, also known as "C&K", and played their first gig at JJ's Café in 1973; and
WHEREAS, CECILIO & KAPONO's perfect blending of arrangements became known as the "C&K sound" that electrified fans and ultimately led to eight consecutive months of sold-out shows at Waikiki's Rainbow Villa which resulted in a multi-album recording contract with Columbia Records; and
WHEREAS, for nearly four decades, CECILIO & KAPONO have captured many hearts around the world, releasing 14 albums and producing numerous hit songs resulting in various Na Hoku Hanohano Awards, including Contemporary Album of the Year, Group of the Year, Song of the Year, and Album of the Year; and
WHEREAS, classic CECILIO & KAPONO songs such
as "About You", "Highway in the Sun", "Lifetime
Party", "Friends", "Good Times Together", and
"Sailin'" remain beloved island favorites; and
WHEREAS, CECILIO & KAPONO have toured the nation and the
world, performing at sold-out concerts in Japan, Guam, Saipan, Diego Garcia,
Tahiti, and the Cook Islands, sharing the stage with some of the greatest
American artists of their time, including Santana, Loggins & Messina, Boz
Scaggs, Peter Frampton, Cheech & Chong, and numerous others; and
WHEREAS, CECILIO & KAPONO and their highly-lauded work continue to serve as a source of inspiration for contemporary Hawaiian music and musicians, and remind us of all that is remarkable about our island home; now, therefore,
BE IT RESOLVED by the House of Representatives of the Twenty-sixth Legislature of the State of Hawaii, Regular Session of 2011, that this body hereby commemorates the Lifetime Achievement Award of CECILIO & KAPONO, honors their contributions to contemporary Hawaiian music, expresses its heartfelt thanks for the gift of music they have given to fans worldwide and to the people of Hawaii, and extends to them its warmest aloha and best wishes for continued success in all future endeavors.
