HOUSE RESOLUTION
Commending and congratulating JALEE FUSELIER on representing Hawaii as Miss Hawaii 2010, and commending and congratulating the prudential spirit of community awards 2011 hawaii state honorees and 2011 hawaii state distinguished finalists.
WHEREAS, JALEE FUSELIER, Miss Hawaii 2010, a Haleiwa resident, was the 2nd runner up in the Miss America pageant, where she represented her home state and district with pride and aloha; and
WHEREAS, JALEE FUSELIER, has a passion to serve the people of Hawaii by earning a Master’s Degree in Counseling Psychology and promoting mental and physical health as well as promoting, preserving and perpetuating the diverse cultures of the world; and
WHEREAS, JALEE FUSELIER’s, love of her sister has inspired her to a commitment of lifetime service to her community; and
WHEREAS, JALEE FUSELIER has earned the Aloha United Way's Presidential Lifetime Service Award and Volunteer of the Year Award for founding Ready for the Real World, a non-profit organization, which offers scholarships to students wanting to further their education or grants for students to encourage volunteerism or study abroad; and
WHEREAS, JALEE FUSELIER has also received the Children’s Miracle Network Miracle Maker Award, Miss Hawaii Academic and Community Service Award, and the Miss Hawaii Outstanding Teen Award; and
WHEREAS, the Prudential Spirit of Community Awards is the United States' largest youth recognition program based on volunteer community service; and
WHEREAS, the awards were created in 1995 by Prudential in partnership with the National Association of Secondary School Principals to honor middle and high school students at the local, state, and national level for outstanding service to others; and
WHEREAS, over the past 16 years, more than 310,000 young Americans have participated in the program and more than 95,000 of them have been officially recognized for their volunteer work; and
WHEREAS, the program strives to both acknowledge young people who are making a positive difference and to inspire others to think about how they might contribute to the well being of their communities; and
WHEREAS, the top middle and high school students from Hawaii will receive a silver medallion and a $1,000 scholarship and will travel to Washington D.C.; and
WHEREAS, the two 2011 Hawaii State Honorees are Carly Button and Natalie Mohr; and
WHEREAS, Carly Button, an 8th grader at Hawaii Technology Academy, co-founded "Dream of a Better World" and raised more than $35,000; and
WHEREAS, Carly and "Dream of a Better World" provided a scholarship, bought a van for an orphanage, provided backpacks filled with supplies for Hawaii's homeless children, and traveled to Africa to care for HIV positive youth; and
WHEREAS, Natalie Mohr, a senior at Kealakehe High School, has spent more than 2700 hours volunteering at Hawaii's only nationally accredited animal sanctuary; and
WHEREAS, Natalie cares for and rehabilitates hundreds of injured animals, leads educational tours, conducts community outreach programs, and heads an educational program to mentor children so they can positively impact Hawaii's wildlife ecosystem; and
WHEREAS, 2011 Hawaii State distinguished finalists are Richel Marie Cole and Kyle Nakatsuka who received bronze medals in recognition of their outstanding efforts; and
WHEREAS, Richel Marie Cole, a senior at Sacred Hearts Academy High School co-founded the YWCA youth network, to have a place for youth to be able to express their voice and have a safe environment to grow and become leaders; and
WHEREAS, Kyle Nakatsuka, a senior at Kamehameha High School – Kapalama, founded Kalihi Valley Instructional Bike Exchange to help at risk youth learn to build a bike of their own using parts, tools, and instruction services provided free of charge; now, therefore,
BE IT RESOLVED by the House of Representatives of the Twenty-sixth Legislature of the State of Hawaii, Regular Session of 2011, that this body commends and congratulates JALEE FUSELIER on representing our state as Miss Hawaii 2010,with a grace and poise that denotes her inner character, and wishes her continued success in her dedicated work in the community and in all of her future endeavors.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED by the House of Representatives of the Twenty-sixth Legislature of the State of Hawaii, Regular Session of 2011, commend and congratulate Carly Button and Natalie Mohr as Prudential Spirit of community Awards 2011 Hawaii State Honorees and Richel Marie Cole and Kyle Nakatsuka as 2011 Hawaii State Distinguished Finalists.
