HOUSE CONCURRENT

RESOLUTION

 

 

REQUESTING THE CITY AND COUNTY OF HONOLULU TO NAME THE NEW CENTRAL OAHU AMBULANCE FACILITY AFTER THE LATE LORETTA FUDDY, DIRECTOR OF HEALTH.

 

 


     WHEREAS, Loretta Fuddy grew up in Kaimuki on Oahu and went on to become involved in school politics as student body president of her high school, Sacred Hearts Academy; and

 

WHEREAS, Loretta Fuddy earned degrees in sociology, social work, and public health from the University of Hawaii and Johns Hopkins School of Medicine, Public Health; and

 

     WHEREAS, Loretta Fuddy was appointed as Director of Health in 2011, after three decades of experience within the Department and becoming a respected national figure on health services and public health administration; and

 

     WHEREAS, when Loretta Fuddy took over as the Director of  Health, one of the first things she did was help save the Maui County medevac helicopter from budget cuts; and

 

     WHEREAS, on December 11, 2013, that same helicopter carried her body and survivors of a commuter plane crash off the Kalaupapa peninsula for further medical treatment; and

 

     WHEREAS, Director Fuddy was killed in the line of duty while serving some of the most abandoned, left out, and marginalized people of Kalaupapa; and

 

     WHEREAS, friends and colleagues remember her as being always personable, always fun-loving, and always ready to help others; and

 

     WHEREAS, Director Fuddy was deeply loved and respected, selfless, utterly dedicated, and committed to her colleagues in the Department of Health; and

 

     WHEREAS, Director Fuddy worked with the Honolulu City Council on issues dealing with dengue fever and radioactive contamination from the Japanese tsunami and, more recently, with helping veterans; and

 

     WHEREAS, Director Fuddy was a fierce advocate for our keiki and kupuna; and

 

     WHEREAS, the Legislature made an appropriation to the City and County of Honolulu in Act 134, Session Laws of Hawaii 2013, for a new "Central Oahu Ambulance Facility" to provide emergency medical services to Leeward Oahu residents after the closing of a major hospital in that area; and

 

     WHEREAS, it is a fitting and proper tribute to Loretta Fuddy, and her family that survived her, for the City and County of Honolulu to name the Central Oahu ambulance facility after Loretta Fuddy; now, therefore,

 

     BE IT RESOLVED by the House of Representatives of the Twenty-seventh Legislature of the State of Hawaii, Regular Session of 2014, the Senate concurring, that the City and County of Honolulu is requested to name the new Central Oahu ambulance facility after the late Loretta Fuddy, Director of Health; and

 

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that certified copies of this Concurrent Resolution be transmitted to the Governor, Mayor of the City and County of Honolulu, and Director of Emergency Services of the City and County of Honolulu.
