HOUSE CONCURRENT
RESOLUTION
Urging the department of land and natural resources to begin converting the lighting fixtures at harbors THROUGHout the state to solar street light devices.
WHEREAS, the Hawaii Clean Energy Initiative has established the goal of transitioning to locally generated renewable energy sources; and
WHEREAS, the installation and use of solar-powered devices will help Hawaii to achieve this clean energy goal; and
WHEREAS, solar street lights require very little maintenance, are not affected by power outages, can be installed anywhere that receives ample sun, do not require trenching the ground to install electrical wires, and do not place any strain on the electrical grid; and
WHEREAS, the Department of Land and Natural Resources, Division of Boating and Ocean Recreation has successfully replaced some lighting at harbors with solar street lights; and
WHEREAS, replacing all lighting at harbors with solar street lights would decrease the electrical and maintenance costs of the State; now, therefore,
BE IT RESOLVED by the House of Representatives of the Twenty-eighth Legislature of the State of Hawaii, Regular Session of 2015, the Senate concurring, that the Department of Land and Natural Resources, Division of Boating and Ocean Recreation is urged to begin replacing some of the overhead parking, dock, walkway, and other lighting at harbors throughout the State with solar street light devices, starting with harbors that receive the most use, are scheduled for a lighting upgrade, would benefit the most from a lighting upgrade, provide the most efficient use of state funds, or provide the most appropriate location to install solar street lights; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that certified copies of this Concurrent Resolution be transmitted to the Chairperson of the Board of Land and Natural Resources and the Administrator of the Department of Land and Natural Resources, Division of Boating and Ocean Recreation.
