HOUSE CONCURRENT

RESOLUTION

 

 

urging the State and county departments of transportation to add hawaiian diacritical marks where appropriate to all street signs and place name signs along highways and roadways upon the replacement of such signs.

 

 

 


     WHEREAS, Hawaiian is an officially recognized language of the State; and

 

     WHEREAS, the proper use of diacritical marks on street signs and place names along Hawaii's highways will:

 

     (1)  Demonstrate the importance of the Hawaiian language to Hawaii's keiki and motivate our keiki to study the Hawaiian language as they see how the Hawaiian language is honored in all aspects of life in the State of Hawaii;

 

     (2)  Assist visitors in gaining a better sense of place of our beautiful Pacific paradise, as well as to better understand the intricacies and pronunciations of the Hawaiian language; and

 

     (3)  Promote the presence of Hawaiian names and the Hawaiian language among all residents of the State of Hawaii, helping to protect Hawaii's unique cultural heritage; and

 

     WHEREAS, adding Hawaiian diacritical marks to street signs and place name signs upon their replacement will not add any undue costs but will increase the proper use of the Hawaiian language over time; now, therefore,

     BE IT RESOLVED by the House of Representatives of the Twenty-eighth Legislature of the State of Hawaii, Regular Session of 2016, the Senate concurring, that the state Department of Transportation, as well as the Department of Transportation Services of the City and County of Honolulu, Department of Public Works of the County of Hawaii, Department of Transportation of the County of Maui, and Department of Public Works of the County of Kauai, are urged to add Hawaiian diacritical marks where appropriate to all street signs and place name signs along highways and roadways upon the replacement of such signs; and

 

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that certified copies of this Concurrent Resolution be transmitted to the Mayors of each county, the Chair of the Honolulu City Council and each county council, the Director of Transportation, the Director of Transportation Services of the City and County of Honolulu, the Director of Public Works of the County of Hawaii, the Director of the Department of Transportation of the County of Maui, and the Director of Public Works of the County of Kauai.
