HOUSE RESOLUTION

 

 

designating july 20, 2019, as "tranquility base day" in hawaii to honor the fIFTIETH anniversary of the apollo 11 lunar landing at tranquility base and urging the united nations educational, scientific, and cultural organization to include tranquility base and associated artifacts on the world heritage list.

 

 


     WHEREAS, July 20, 2019, is the fiftieth anniversary of the historic Apollo 11 spaceflight that landed the first humans on the surface of the moon at Tranquility Base; and

 

     WHEREAS, the Apollo 11 lunar landing is one of the most significant technological advancements in history; and

 

     WHEREAS, this remarkable achievement fulfilled President John F. Kennedy's goal set forth in his 1961 speech before the United States Congress to send a man to the moon and return him safely to Earth within a decade; and

 

     WHEREAS, the Apollo 11 lunar landing was exceptionally significant for the United States and the world, representing the first time a human stepped foot on another celestial surface; and

 

     WHEREAS, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration designed, led, and executed the Apollo program; and

 

     WHEREAS, the landing site, "Tranquility Base", was named after the region planned for the first human lunar landing on the moon's Sea of Tranquility; and

 

     WHEREAS, the first human landing at Tranquility Base represented the combined efforts and contributions of thousands of researchers, scientists, and engineers from many nations and states, including Hawaii; and

 

     WHEREAS, Hawaii's role in the Apollo program and space exploration is represented by numerous facilities and programs statewide, including Kauai's Kōkee Tracking Station, which provided voice relay and telemetry data communications between the Apollo 11 astronauts and the National Aeronautics and Space Administration's Mission Control Center in Houston, Texas; and

 

     WHEREAS, Hawaii's unique geological landscape was essential for the training of the Apollo 11 astronauts that was carried out in Halemaumau crater, Kapoho, Kīlauea Iki crater, Aloi and Alae craters, Mauna Ulu, Kīlauea Hualālai volcano, Mauna Kea volcano, and Mauna Loa volcano between 1965 and 1972; and

 

     WHEREAS, Hawaii was instrumental in supporting the splashdown and recovery of the Apollo 11 astronauts and the command module spacecraft returning from the moon; and

 

     WHEREAS, prior to being transported back to Texas, the Apollo 11 astronauts traveled in a mobile quarantine facility from Pearl Harbor to Hickam Air Force Base; and

 

     WHEREAS, despite the extraordinary challenges and sacrifices required by this immense undertaking, the first human landing on the moon was a success due to the contributions of many participants, including the State of Hawaii, and a commemoration event celebrating the Apollo 11 lunar landing and the role of Hawaii and its people in this crowning achievement of science, technology, engineering, mathematics, perseverance, and human aspiration is to be held on July 20, 2019, sponsored by the State Archives and the University of Hawaii Windward Community College Center for Aerospace Education at the Kaneohe, Oahu campus; now, therefore,

 

     BE IT RESOLVED by the House of Representatives of the Thirtieth Legislature of the State of Hawaii, Regular Session of 2019, that July 20, 2019, be designated as "Tranquility Base Day" in Hawaii to honor the fiftieth anniversary of the Apollo 11 lunar landing at Tranquility Base; and

 

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that this body encourages the State's citizens to celebrate "Tranquility Base Day" to honor the Apollo 11 lunar landing, the contributions of people and places in Hawaii to the Apollo program in general and the Apollo 11 mission in particular, and the importance of this notable milestone in the history of Hawaii, the United States, and the world; and

 

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that this body urges the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization to include Tranquility Base and associated artifacts on the World Heritage List, along with other renowned landmarks, including the Pyramids at Giza, the Great Wall of China, Independence Hall, and the Statue of Liberty; and

 

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that certified copies of this Resolution be transmitted to the Governor; President of the University of Hawaii; Chancellor of Windward Community College; State Archivist; and Director-General of the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization.
