Mental and physical health are equally important components of overall health.  Mental illness, especially depression, increases the risk for many types of physical health problems, particularly long-lasting conditions such as stroke, type 2 diabetes, and heart disease. Conversely, the presence of chronic physical health conditions can increase the risk for mental illness.

How common are mental illnesses? According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Mental illnesses are among the most common health conditions in the United States.

The purpose of the Legislative Briefing is to better understand the state of youth mental health in Hawaii and how government and communities may collaborate to improve services to address mental health in Hawaii.

 

Invited to provide a short presentation (3 minutes) are the following organizations:

After the Briefing the Committee will provide a summary of the top priorities to address relating to youth mental health.
